My Writerly Self - Week 5 - Notebook LM

Karen Eastland Podcast

Creative Journal: October 28th - October 31st

Monday, 28th October
Today, I completed Who Are The Keylass, now available to read on Jerrymanders (https://jerrymanders.com/who-are-the-keylass). After finishing the story, I had Sol perform a quick line edit, realising I’d missed specifying tense consistency in my prompt. This oversight prompted me to update the editing prompt to ensure Sol keeps the past tense consistent throughout the narrative, while dialogue remains in the present tense for authenticity.

In discussing my expectations with Sol, I touched on the use of profanity and graphic violence in my fiction. Sol initially altered these elements, but after clarifying that these aspects should remain in my Sin-Eater and Josephine and Jason novels, Sol updated her memory and kept both intact in future edits. This collaboration reinforces Sol’s role as a dynamic, adaptable editor who maintains my authorial style.

I spent today upgrading my tools, downloading Anything LLM (https://anythingllm.com/download) and Ollama (https://ollama.com) on my Mac, along with the Llama3.1 LLM within the Anything LLM workspace. This setup has enabled me to create a private, searchable database where I can store all my manuscripts, character roles, and bios.

Organised on an external drive, this database allows me to pull in character references, backstories, and setting details relevant to each writing session. For example, when writing about Indicus-Resquire, I can instantly access all documents related to the Sin-Eater universe. This streamlined approach is something I’ve aimed to set up for weeks, and it’s finally coming together as a powerful resource for my creative process.

Today’s focus was on songwriting. I wrote The Tale About Us, then took the lyrics into Udio (https://udio.ai) to trim excess words and refine the chorus. After finalising the lyrics, I moved the song into LoudMe (https://loudme.ai) and Suno (https://suno.com) for production. I also created an album cover using Ideogram AI (https://ideogram.ai) for my YouTube playlist, Cassidy and The Castoffs (YouTube Playlist).

The song was fully written, produced, and uploaded to YouTube today. I also updated my website, Music.KarenEastland.id.au (https://music.kareneastland.id.au), adding upcoming releases scheduled for November and December.

Thursday, 31st October
I started writing a new song, Will You Remember Me?, and began refining its lyrics in Udio. Once I’m satisfied with the structure, I’ll bring it into Suno and LoudMe for production. Notably, LoudMe no longer provides daily credits on its free plan; instead, it now offers monthly credits, matching the previous daily credit amount.

Updated Editor prompt:

Hi, Sol,

Please edit the following story using Australian English, ensuring my authorial voice, tone, and language are maintained. When making edits, focus on the following:

  1. Consistency of Style: Ensure that the narrative remains true to my established style—whether that’s dark, witty, poetic, introspective, or contains profanity and violence. Any changes should complement, rather than alter, the essence of the original text.
  2. Clarity and Flow: Enhance sentence structure, word choice, and paragraph transitions to improve the readability and flow of the story. If certain phrases or sections feel clunky or unclear, feel free to suggest adjustments, but ensure they align with my overall tone.
  3. Character Development: Ensure that character voices remain authentic, maintaining their distinct personalities, language, and emotional depth. Any additions or changes should deepen character motivations and relationships.
  4. World-Building and Descriptions: When refining descriptions, keep the imagery vivid and immersive, but true to my original vision. Add sensory details or atmosphere only where they enhance the story’s setting without deviating from the established world.
  5. Tense Consistency: Ensure that the narrative maintains a consistent past tense throughout. Dialogue should remain unaltered in present tense but should be checked for internal consistency, ensuring that it reflects the characters' intentions and context accurately.
  6. Dialogue Authenticity: Ensure dialogue sounds natural for each character, maintaining their unique mannerisms and speech patterns. Adjust pacing within conversations to match the intended tension or levity, but keep the dialogue in the present tense where it aligns with natural speech patterns.
  7. Cohesive Themes: Retain the core themes and messages of the story. Any edits should reinforce the underlying themes without introducing new ones that could distract from the narrative’s original purpose.

Please ensure that the overall edit remains in harmony with my creative intent while refining the language and structure for a polished final draft.
